Kumbhakarna is a character from Hindu mythology, specifically from the epic Ramayana. He is the younger brother of the demon king Ravana, who is the main antagonist of the story.

Kumbhakarna is famous for his great size and strength, as well as his insatiable appetite. According to the myth, he was blessed by the gods with a long life and immense power, but also cursed to sleep for six months at a time.

Legend has it that Kumbhakarna once asked for a boon from the gods, and he requested that he be granted an invincible body and an insatiable appetite. However, due to a misunderstanding, the god who granted the boon mistook “nidraasana” (bed) for “nidra asana” (sleep asana or posture) and gave Kumbhakarna the ability to sleep for long periods of time instead.

As a result of the curse, Kumbhakarna would sleep for six months at a time and wake up only to eat. His sleep cycle was so long that it was said that even the gods had trouble waking him up when they needed his help in battle.

Despite his great strength and size, Kumbhakarna ultimately meets his end in the Ramayana when he fights against Rama, the hero of the story, and is killed in battle.
