According to the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Dhritarashtra was born blind. He was the eldest son of King Vichitravirya and Queen Ambika, and was born through a process called Niyoga, where a woman is impregnated by a man other than her husband.
When Ambika was pregnant with Dhritarashtra, she was frightened by the appearance of the sage Vyasa who had been summoned to impregnate her. As a result, Dhritarashtra was born blind.
It is believed that his blindness was not only physical, but also symbolic of his lack of insight and foresight as a ruler. Dhritarashtra’s blindness also played a significant role in the events of the Mahabharata, as it prevented him from taking an active role in governing his kingdom and eventually led to his downfall.
