What is the role of Vikarna in Mahabharata?

Vikarna is a minor character in the Hindu epic Mahabharata, but he played a significant role in the Kurukshetra war. He was one of the hundred Kaurava brothers and the third son of King Dhritarashtra and Queen Gandhari. Here are some key aspects of Vikarna’s role in the Mahabharata:

  1. Advocacy of dharma: Vikarna was known for his adherence to dharma (righteousness) and his strong sense of justice. He was the only Kaurava brother who spoke out against the injustice of Draupadi’s disrobing during the infamous dice game, and he chastised his brothers for their cowardice and lack of morality.
  2. Opposition to war: Despite his loyalty to the Kaurava cause, Vikarna was opposed to the Kurukshetra war and tried to persuade his brothers to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. He believed that the war would result in great loss of life and that it would be better for the Kauravas to negotiate a settlement with the Pandavas.
  3. Death in battle: Despite his opposition to the war, Vikarna fought bravely on the side of the Kauravas. He was eventually killed by Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers, during the final battle of Kurukshetra.

Overall, Vikarna is remembered as a character who embodied the values of dharma and justice, even in the midst of a great conflict. His story teaches us the importance of standing up for what is right, even if it means going against one’s own family or friends, and the futility of war as a means of resolving disputes.
